Smiling High School is a four-year linguistic high school with Scuola Paritaria Status active in Ferrara from the 2018/2019 school year.
It is a school recognized by the Italian State that offers scientific-linguistic training through an innovative teaching method.
The course of study lasts 4 years, at the end of which students obtain the final High School Diploma (diploma di maturità) that gives them access to any type of university, Italian and foreign, one year earlier than students attending courses in traditional Italian high school curriculums.
Our Liceo is experimental. We participated in a public examination from the Ministry of Education in which we presented our educational project: the Ministry evaluated it positively, so much so that we were able to activate the four-year course and to obtain Scuola Paritaria Status.
The Liceo is located in the fascinating Palazzo Gulinelli, a historic building in the city centre of Ferrara. Here you will also find the Smiling Loft Apartments, a residence available for university or high school students coming from outside Ferrara.

THE STUDY PLAN
Liceo Smiling offers a shorter, but no less complete high school curriculum. The type of school course to which our four-year experimental High School refers to is that of the Italian LINGUISTIC LICEO. All non-linguistic disciplines are taught in English. Our classes are deliberately small in number, to allow for a better relationship between teachers and students.
EVALUATION AND SELF-ASSESSMENT
To make student assessment more effective, each quarter is divided into two two-month periods. We ask students to learn to self-assess and to compare their self-assessments with those of teachers: this practice is very useful for students to better understand themselves and their performance.
LANGUAGE CERTIFICATIONS
Students will have the opportunity to obtain official certifications according to the European framework on levels of linguistic ability.
Curriculum, Orari e Materiale
I libri di testo sono scelti con cura dai Professori insieme alla Preside e al Coordinatore. I testi scritti sono principalmente in inglese, spesso accompagnati da materiale didattico supplementare per migliorare l’apprendimento degli studenti. Per aderire alle linee guida ministeriali italiane, alcune materie richiedono l’utilizzo di libri di testo in italiano. In questi casi, gli insegnanti forniranno materiale complementare in inglese.

Learning languages naturally
The vehicular language for non-linguistic subjects is English. Thanks to this method – typical of all Smiling schools – our students achieve an extremely high level of command and knowledge of the English language.
Even the teaching of Spanish and Chinese, by native or qualified teachers, increases the knowledge of languages understood as living tools for communication: our students speak the languages they study, they can use them to communicate and to move within a broad and rich horizon of relationships, knowledge, experiences.
Scientific subjects – Mathematics, Physics, Natural Sciences – represent an area of knowledge which is essential to complete the education of young people.
CONCLUSIVE DIPLOMA
Our students take the Esame di Stato and obtain the High School Diploma (diploma di maturità). They can then access any university (Italian and foreign).
