Trento is a big city and it hosts one of the largest Christmas markets in Italy, with over sixty traditional wooden huts. It often has an ordinary market and second-hand market on at the weekends too, which can be great fun. Get your walking shoes on!
By car: 2 hours 20 minutes / By Train: 3 hours approx. (30-35 euros)
Bolzano
28th November 2019 – 6th January 2020

Parking is difficult (but not impossible) in the centre of Bolzano as there are a lot of one- way systems. The tourist board recommends that you leave your car in one of the larger car parks outside Bolzano and take one of the buses provided, which run every 15 minutes into the town centre. The Christmas market in the square is beautiful and will undoubtedly make you feel very festive, especially with a little help from some Christmas wine!
By car: 3 hours. Exit from the motorway at “Bolzano Sud Fair” / By train: 4 hours approx. Ferrara – Bologna – Bolzano 35-40 euros (Piazza Walther is only 5 minutes on foot from the train station)
Merano

Merano has a very pretty Christmas market along the river and it is a very beautiful town with mountains all around it. What a shame it can only be reached by car. It takes a good 3 and a half hours to get there but if you are already in Bolzano it is worth visiting Merano too.
Verona

If you do not want to travel as far as Bolzano, Verona offers a lovely Christmas experience for all the family. It hosts an enormous German market in Piazza dei Signori (also known as Piazza Dante, in the heart of the shopping streets) and in the tiny squares nearby. This is not to be confused with Piazza Bra, the main square with the Arena, which often hosts an ordinary market in the run up to Christmas. Buy a map when you arrive or follow signs to the Christmas market.
Nativity exhibition in the Arena of Verona
16th November 2019 – 19th January 2020
9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Piazza Bra
In the main square (Piazza Bra) you can admire the enormous, white, iron star shooting over the Arena and visit an amazing exhibition of over 400 nativity scenes held in the Arena itself. Tickets cost 7 euros for adults, 6 euros for children and are free for children under the age of 6. For those who are not particularly interested in nativity scenes it is still worth going in, as the Arena is amazing!
Train Station: Verona Porta Nuova / By Car: Rovigo then take the ring road (‘Tangenziale’) to Verona
Santa Lucia, Verona 10th – 13th December
In Verona, in the past, the children used to celebrate the arrival of Saint Lucia (not Father Christmas), who would arrive on the night between the 12th and 13th December and leave sweets for the children and a piece of black coal to anyone who had been naughty! Today in Verona, children enjoy a special market in Piazza Bra with gifts, sweets and other traditional food.

This is an enormous indoor Christmas village. It is similar to an English garden centre with magical winter displays and decorations to buy. In this village there are also craft workshops for children, ice-skating, and shows. Father Christmas can be found in his grotto each weekend and it is even possible to have dinner with him if you book. There is a small admission fee to pay of 2 euros at weekends during the Christmas period, but in the week admission is free. If you buy the weekend tickets on-line you can jump the queue.
Ferrara’s Christmas Village

Ferrara’s own Christmas market will arrive in Piazza Trento Trieste. It sells gifts such as books, local crafts, food and knick-knacks.
